dog tags

in 1945, my dad was a tail gunner on a b-17
8th air force
91st bomb group
324th bomb squadron

his aunt gave him the texaco scotty medal
for good luck.
it worked. for sure.
my dad survived 29 missions
helping to secure the allies
crossing the rhine in the
final days of the war in europe.

i always wondered what
'listen' meant,
thinking perhaps it was a reminder to stay on the alert
in war time.

then i found this print ad.

'listen to the improvement in your engine'.
all around sound advice.

accumulating sorrow

He came to us New Years Eve only 6 weeks old,
weighing all of 4 pounds.
He left us after 17 1/2 years.

Betty, Ann Nell, Karen, Grif and Zoe. Bea. Ed and Christine.
Jack and Jack. Diane and Mark. Sherry. David.
Dear Yosh and Kayla, Stella and Zu.
Allysum, Cosmo, Rocket and Tria.
Kyle, Gus and Koki.
Skye and Blix. Basil.  Luna, too. The sweet, sweet finches…

 Murph knew them all.
 All gone somewhere.
 What a guy.
How lucky were we?

the wee-bob is saved by jesus

it was a bit like divine intervention.
a man named jesus
was working under a bush at my home
when he called
to me.
he said he recognized mochi and knew that his family was looking for him.
and mochi's name was really
"ascencione"
and he understood spanish,
had 2 kids and another little chi friend who loved him at home.
so i let him go to jesus.
and reunite with his pack.
but i'll be checking up on him
and i believe jesus will watch over him, too.

pack those pups together

tully and murph are a wonderful influence on wee-bob, although he was a already a fairly calm little fellow when i found him. he also has a respect for the power of tull's long legs and the frailty of murph's balance. it is so sweet to see them relate to each other….

so i have to call him something….

bittibud. peekoe. michi. weebob.
if his people don't come for him i need to call him
something so his new family will know who he has been to me
and the temporary pack.
and yes, i already love him as i do my own
but
the satisfaction of successful rescue and reuniting or adoption
will outweigh the sadness
of separation.
i hope.

down sizing

we were running-with-the-big-dogs folks
but we've been steadily downsizing since the 100+ pound akita days.
yoshi at 110
kaia at 100
kayla at 90
stella at 65
zu at 45
tully at 30
mighty murph is down to 15
but today the mini-est might came into our lives.
a teeny weeny chihuahua i found loose on busy main street.
4 pounds max
but 100% dog.
i hope his people are looking for him because he'a a cutie.

my old man

mighty murph is 17 1/2 years old now.
he's pretty much blind and mostly deaf to all but what truly matters.
he can see lamplight. he can hear a spoon tapping on a bowl and the garage door opening.
he still loves his breakfast, lunch and dinner.
and elevensies.
and licking the whip cream beaters.
he's lucky to have lived in the same house since he was 3 months old
so he knows his way around the place
and can usually get outside to pee and poo
and drink from his favorite water bowl.
he loves his people and
his dog friend tully comforts him.
he still enjoys a walk down to the post office with mikey.
now he sleeps so deeply we are surprised when he comes back the next morning,
then he wobbles and weaves his way to see what's for breakfast.
then sleeps until snack time.
then sleeps until lunch.
then dinner.

cute.
cuter.
cutest.

the dog house stairs

zuni loved my spiral stairs.
he made his nest underneath.

and could keep an eye on me from above.

tully loves the stairs, too.

they are a perfect fit.

hanging with the arty dogs

today i framed and hung "can we eat, can we eat",  a print of one of my favorites of david haight's mixed media works. reminds me of christmas eve when 4 wild and lucky pups all sat in rapt attention waiting  for their special treat.
